Good News for Cardiac Patients
The Australasian Society of Medical Perfusion (ASMP) welcomes the news that Commonwealth Minister for Health Greg Hunt and Commonwealth Treasurer Josh Frydenberg are restoring a more sensible Medicare benefit for medical perfusion services.
On Tuesday 6 October 2020, the Treasurer delivered Australia’s budget. He used the opportunity to correct issues from the 2019 budget, where the Medicare benefits for medical perfusion services were dramatically reduced by deleting item codes without a corresponding increase in the remaining codes.
The changes will take place from 1 March 2021.
“The Morrison government has achieved a positive result for patients, professionals and the Australian health system, by ensuring that the important work of medical perfusion during cardiac surgery is recognised with appropriate rebates” ASMP President, Dr Joe Power, states.
“Restoring the Medicare benefit for medical perfusion to a more sensible amount shows how the Commonwealth government is working with stakeholders to rectify issues when identified” says ASMP President Dr Joe Power.
